Project Summary:

One of seven dioramas originally commissioned by Strawbridge and Clothier for the opening of Neshaminy Mall in Bensalem, PA; this diorama was conserved on-site at the Bensalem Police Department. The diorama is composed of various materials, including water-sensitive paint, feathers, metal foil, and doll hair. Nine of the thirty three unique figures were animated using a motorized system below the floor of the diorama scene. After decades on display, the diorama had collected dust, was exposed to a minor water event, and areas of detachment.

The diorama was carefully dry cleaned with soft sponges, and wet cleaned as possible. Broken figures and architectural elements were reattached and stabilized. Areas of loss were inpainted and lost decorative elements in the figure’s clothing were replicated and attached with reversible media. During the treatment process, members of the Bensalem community stopped by to reminisce seeing the dioramas in the mall decades ago. Our studio was pleased to help preserve a beloved work of the Bensalem community. This project was also featured on the Mayor’s Show, a local show run by the Mayor of Bensalem.
